Sherwood Anderson Archives

The Sherwood Anderson archive is the area of Smyth County Public Library dedicated to housing all Anderson artifacts. It is located on the ground floor beside the Rose Greer Akers reference area.

The Sherwood Anderson Archive of the Smyth County Public Library seeks to document the life and works of Sherwood Anderson. A real sense of Sherwood Anderson's presence still pervades Marion. The surrounding town and countryside were Sherwood Anderson's haunts during the last twelve years of his life. The Sherwood Anderson Archive in the Smyth County Public Library offers what other libraries cannot, immediate access to Sherwood Anderson’s world in Southwest Virginia. Sherwood spent his life searching for utopia and probably came closest to finding happiness in these mountains among the people he so enjoyed.

Collections and materials in the Sherwood Anderson Archive cover the life and works of Sherwood Anderson. Subjects collected include his novels, short stories, essays, literary criticisms of his work, biographies, family histories, and other aspects of Anderson's life and writings. Types of material collected include (but are not limited to) books, manuscripts, periodicals, newspaper clippings, oral history, pamphlets, and photographs. Of special interest are first editions of his works.

Contributions to the Sherwood Anderson Archive of the Smyth County Public Library are invited. They may consist of books by or about Sherwood Anderson, letters to or from Mr. Anderson, or other literary artifacts, including photographs, relating to him.

The first contribution was from Dr. Hilbert H. Campbell, and it included, among other items, some original letters written by Anderson. Another notable contribution was a complete set of The Works of Sherwood Anderson, second edition, published in Japan, received through the courtesy of Dr. Kichinosuke Ohashi, Editor.
